Donation to Red Cross for Covid-19

Two months have passed since our Facet Music 2020 Calgary Chinese New Year concert.

After all the twists and turns, on April 8th we finally fulfilled our promise — donating half of the concert ’s box office income of $3500 to the Red Cross Calgary Covid-19 rescue project.

We hope we can all get through this special time safely!

Thank you for your trust and support for Facet Music!

A Difficult Decision

Facet Music has consulted the government and Alberta Health Services about holding concerts in light of the situation with the coronavirus outbreak in China. Their answer was ”the risk is extremely low”. Unfortunately, this doesn’t account for the community’s fear of gatherings right now, which will drastically affect attendance of our upcoming events.

It is therefore with great regret that Facet Music has decided to cancel the February 2 show of Song of the Phoenix - 2020 Calgary Chinese New Year Concert.

However, we will go ahead with the February 1 show. We will combine the audience from both nights onto that evening. If any ticket holders for the February 2 show do not wish to come on February 1, we will refund their tickets. We will contact ticket holders presently.

Facet Music is donating half the box office proceeds toward providing protective face masks and other medical supplies to those who need them in China.

We sincerely hope for your understanding under these difficult circumstances.

- Facet Music

Coming Together to Help

Dear friends,

As you know, there is a coronavirus outbreak in China in the midst of the country’s biggest celebration, Chinese New Year. We all feel this tragedy deeply and want to help our brothers and sisters in China in their time of need.

We will donate half the box office proceeds from the Chinese New Year Concerts toward providing protective face masks and other supplies to those who need them in China.

This weekend’s Chinese New Year Concerts are a chance for our entire community to pull together and help those affected by the outbreak in China. Let us all show our support while lifting our spirits in these difficult times by celebrating the art and culture that binds us all together, wherever we are in the world.

— Facet Music

Facet Music is a young non-profit arts organization committed to preserving the traditions of Asian music and arts by highlighting their importance and relevance in Canadian society. Facet Music will report on the progress of the donation process on social media in the coming days.

A Shot of Music • A Shot of Moutai

On Sunday November 17, 2019 3-6pm, Facet Music will be hosting a special edition of the Warehouse Live Series: “A Shot of Music · A Shot of Moutai”. Held at the usual rustic yet beautiful furniture warehouse Wu & McHugh, the event pairs delicious music with Moutai cocktails.

This episode features Calgary’s rising star flutist, Jiajia Li, one of Calgary’s most versatile percussionists, Robin Tufts, as well as the Calgary Chinese Orchestra under the baton of young guest conductor, Bang Zhang.

Since her arrival in Calgary in 2014, Li has forged her identity through music and performance, cutting across a wide range of modern musical experimentations and traditions.

Tufts has been an integral part of the Calgary music scene for decades (his group Trio Velocity, with Simon Frisk and Sheldon Zandboer being a recent highlight), combining his masterful technique with taste to match.

Over the past 20 years, the Calgary Chinese Orchestra (CCO) has been a hub, attracting all kinds of people from the community to share theIr passion for Chinese music. The sound of a unique array of Chinese instruments is indescribable.

A signature welcome Moutai cocktail will be created especially for the event. Moutai is a distilled Chinese liquor (spirit), made in the town of Moutai in China's Guizhou province with over 400 years of history.

Thank you to our event sponsor Kweichow Moutai!
