SONG OF THE PHOENIX - 2020 CALGARY CHINESE NEW YEAR CONCERT

Facet Music’s 3rd annual event, titled “Song of Phoenix - 2020 Chinese New Year Concert”, will take place February 1 and February 2, 2020 at 7:30pm, at the Grand theatre downtown (608 1 St SW, Calgary, AB T2P 1M6).

This year we celebrate the Chinese mythological bird, Feng Huang — the Chinese Phoenix — which symbolizes high virtue, grace and prosperity. It also embodies duality and symbolizes the union of male and female spirits. Throughout its long history, Feng Huang has been an inspiration for people’s lives, and continues to influence creative lives today.

The concert features internationally renowned pianist Corey Hamm and his duo PEP (Piano and Erhu Project); Suona virtuoso Wu Zhong-xi; cutting-edge singer/songwriter FOONYAP; dynamic jazz trombonist Carsten Rubeling, choreographer/dancer Barbara England and her newly commissioned work; the one and only Calgary Chinese Orchestra, as well as many local talents.

Our Chinese New Year show also features FOONYAP, an artist described by CBC Music as “a lush, weird and intoxicating blend of electro-opera meets experimental pop”.
Have you ever heard of the double-reed Chinese horn, the suona? The concert features a master of the instrument, Wu Zhongxi from China, who will perform one of the Chinese classics: “Song of the Phoenix”, with Calgary Chinese Orchestra.
We proudly present PEP (Piano and Erhu Project) from Vancouver. Pianist Cory Hamm and Erhuist Nicole Ge Li make up the virtuosic duo which has been a cross-cultural phenomenon in western Canada.
